Walter Thompson is committed to providing a skilled industry workforce through high quality work based training programmes and is determined to maintain its proud record of recruiting a new intake of Apprentices in each and every one of the last 50 years.
Walter Thompson have been working closely with Northallerton School and Sixth Form College to encourage students to consider a career within the construction industry. To inspire the students to go the extra mile and create some friendly competition, Walter Thompson offered ‘Student of the Year’ awards to the finest GCSE and A Level work with awards being recently presented to Jack Allen (GCSE Resistant Materials) for his engraved engraved wooden box and George McNaught (A Level Product Design) for his model of Brompton Juniors Football stadium.
In addition to the recent awards, which will be repeated next Year, there will be a scheduled school trip to visit a Walter Thompson construction site in September for the Year 10 students. This will allow them to see first hand, how Walter Thompson as a company operates and show them how a construction site functions.
Paul Hammerton, Managing Director of Walter Thompson, explained: “We have a great reputation for training young people and our well-established and respected apprenticeship programme has been going for more than 50 years.”
The company has a close relationship with Northallerton School and Sixth Form College, with senior members of the Walter Thompson team going into the School to speak to students, explaining the opportunities within the firm.
The company takes up to four apprentices every year, some straight from school and others from Colleges.
He explained: “It works well for us and the students. We train our apprentices the way we want, and they get to work for a well-run, well-respected, ambitious company. The majority of apprentices stay with us forever and there are also excellent opportunities within the company for those who want to progress into management.”
